The Power of Therapy

A seven-year-old second grader with ADHD was hyperactive, impulsive, and disruptive. During therapy, he attempted to throw a fire extinguisher through a window and push over a book shelf. His parents learned the First Time Game, a therapeutic strategy they used at home to help him to comply with their requests. One day, his teacher called his mother because he refused to do what she asked, claiming she didn’t say “First Time.” Message: What is learned in therapy and practiced at home does generalize to other environments and people. At-home practice is the key to power.
